Things You Should Be Cleaning
Do you think your house is clean? I like to think my house is clean too, once I check that these things are clean. Check your space for the things you should be cleaning but aren’t.
Trash Can
Um, does taking the trash out count as cleaning? Trash is gross, but your trash can doesn’t have to be. Whenever I take my trash out I wipe down the inside of my trash can and the lid. Then, I’ll put the new trash bag in. Because I do this every time, this task takes me less than a minute.
To wipe out my trashcan I will either reach for my Mrs. Meyer’s all purpose spray or my DIY Thieves cleaner (recipe below). Wiping out my trash can helps cut down on any kitchen smells. Make wiping out your trash can a habit when taking out your trash.
Cell Phones
Phones are disgusting. We set them down everywhere. Our fingers get dirty and then we touch our phones. I remember reading somewhere that our phones have more germs than toilet seats (don’t quote me on that, I just remember that from somewhere.)
Bottom line is, our cell phones are just mobile germ magnets. You can wipe your phone down with a lens and electronics wipe. Or you can make a DIY spray. I use this Thieves cleaner spray. Just spray once on the front and back and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. I try to wipe down my phone at least once a week. Make sure cell phones are on your list of things you should be cleaning.
Door Knobs
Reach for your all purpose cleaner or DIY Thieves Cleaner for your door knobs. Your whole family touches the door knobs, they cough, sneeze, don’t wash their hands, and other stuff. Then, they touch the door knob. Door knobs are usually forgotten when cleaning a room. Make sure to give your door knobs a good shine after cleaning.
Toothbrush
Toothbrushes clean your teeth, so they are clean right? Wrong. They clean your teeth and in return get your germs on them. Not to mention, if you leave your toothbrush on the counter it is exposed to all kinds of bathroom germs. (shiver)
Cleaning your toothbrush is easy. Here is a simple way that I use to clean our toothbrushes.
- Fill a glass with 1 cup of water
- Add 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar (don’t worry you won’t taste it)
- Drop in your toothbrushes (bristle side down)
- Let sit for 30 minutes
- Rinse well, dry, and enjoy a disinfected toothbrush
Toilet Brush
Don’t stop reading, stick with me here. I know toilet brushes are completely disgusting! However, they will only get worse if you let the germs multiply.
I’m trying to get better at this task. One simple tip is once you clean your toilet, let your brush air dry. I put mine between the bowl and seat so it can drip dry over the toilet.
Here is how I clean my toilet brush:
- I put my toilet brush and stand in the shower and use very hot water to rinse off both parts.
- Then I spray some DIY Thieves Cleaner in my stand and wipe it out.
- Once it is wiped out I spray one time again and leave it so the spray continues to disinfect.
- Then I use really hot water and blast my toilet brush from all angles.
- Next, set your toilet brush to drip dry (pictured above)
- I then spray my Thieves cleaner on the brush and allow to air dry and disinfect all at once.
This isn’t the most glamorous job, but the toilet brush should definitely be one of the things you should be cleaning.
These were the five things you should be cleaning. Make them part of your to-do list whenever possible.
DIY Thieves Cleaner
If you have never heard of Thieves you should google it. Thieves is an Essential Oil blend of Lemon, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils. This Essential Oil blend is all the things disinfecting and cleaning.
Thieves Cleaner is just one of the ways that I use Thieves Essential Oil around the house. There are many ways to make an all-purpose cleaner with Thieves Household Cleaner. This is just the way that I do it.
Materials:
- 16 oz. glass spray bottle
- Thieves household cleaner
- Purification Essential Oil
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Distilled Water
Recipe:
- Open the glass spray bottle and add 1-2 capfuls of Thieves household cleaner (I usually use 2)
- Add 5 drops of Purification Essential Oil
- Add 5 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
- Fill the rest of the glass spray bottle with distilled water
- Screw on the top, shake, and start cleaning
