Decluttering the Kitchen

Decluttering the kitchen can be a daunting task. The kitchen is the heart of the home and it is easy for it to become cluttered. Read along to see my process of decluttering the kitchen in my home.

Along with all of my other new year resolutions, decluttering my house is on my list of goals. My husband and I live in a camper and our space is limited. It is so easy for our clutter to get out of control and make us feel like we are living in total chaos.

I wanted to give you an idea of how I live and organize in our camper. Space saving can be tricky and usually after Christmas we are bursting at the seams with stuff. A place I have been meaning to get to has been our kitchen. When you walk into our camper you run smack dab into the kitchen. Like they say, the kitchen is the heart of the home, uh, camper. When you start with a tough space first, then you can build momentum. So, without anymore delay here is my kitchen pantry.

My Process

The before of my pantry

The first step I took was to take everything out. I only tackled one shelf at a time. My counter space is limited so this was just easier for me. Next, I went through and chunked everything that had expired. Then, I tried to decant as much as I could.

I went shelf by shelf and decided what my husband and I still ate and what we no longer ate. Some of the packages I was saving had a tablespoon of food left in the package. I decided it was okay to throw these products away since I wouldn’t be buying any more.

After I decided what would stay in my pantry I put everything into categories like snacks, rice and pasta, canned foods, and drinks like tea and coffee.

One of the biggest things was being able to put these canisters in my pantry. Freeing up some counter space made all the difference in the way my kitchen looks.

My pantry looks so much better and I actually know where everything is at. One thing I realized was how much I had repurchased when I didn’t know what was in my pantry. One of Kon Mari’s rules is that everything in your drawers and cabinets should be easily visible so you know what you have.

Decluttering the Drawers

Once my pantry was decluttered, I was able to clean out the drawers that I have been putting off for a long time. I love cooking and being in my kitchen. However, I was getting tired of working around all of the clutter.

I decided to turn on Tidying Up on Netflix and work through the different spots in my kitchen. I must admit that I got a little excited and didn’t take as many pictures as I originally planned. To be that motivated is awesome when decluttering the kitchen.

This drawer was a big anxiety starter for me. I didn’t need much in this drawer, however, I felt like I had no where else to put this stuff. Slowly, I worked through each item and the end result looks amazing.
